Sorry to Stare 👀| black history, expansion and little lives
There is a parodied song running in the background of my TikTok feed this winter beginning with the lyrics: “I think I like this little life.” The song brought out a theme of perfect couples, beautiful homes, and the tiny wins that together make life sweet. Yet, the visuals paired with it started off so cloying and idealistic that the trend was turned on its head and creator’s made videos to usurp the sweetness by showing how our lives can be harder and mundane as a means to mock the song. These videos are funnier and more relatable than their predecessors, using the power of social media to fight its adverse effects of oversimplification and show some realism with a dose of humor.
